How to Join

The Greek Life community at Ohio State is comprised of:

  • All-men?s and All-women?s fraternities and sororities
  • Coeducational fraternities
  • Culturally-based fraternities and sororities
  • Traditionally African-American fraternities and sororities

No matter which organization you are interested in joining, it is important to begin here. The registration process for each organization is the same.

After registration, depending on the organization, the recruitment process may be different. Once you register, you will be contacted by the appropriate organization and the process will be explained to you further.

FAQs

What is Recruitment?

The process for joining a Greek organization is called "Recruitment" or "Intake," but oftentimes you will hear it referred to as "Rush." The Recruitment/Intake process varies from campus to campus.

When does it happen?

At Ohio State, we have a Deferred Recruitment process. Deferred recruitment delays, or defers the joining process for all organizations until Winter Quarter (January). The delayed joining process allows students to adjust to Ohio State during Fall quarter while researching involvement opportunities and focusing on academics.

Why should I join?

Membership in a Greek organization provides opportunities for involvement unlike others on campus. Involvement in a Greek letter fraternity or sorority provides a unique life-long experience. Greek Life has been a part of Ohio State?s campus for over 100 years. Greek Life provides opportunities for leadership development, service, and deeper friendships, among other things. With over 60 Greek organizations at Ohio State, you are almost guaranteed to find one that provides the opportunities you are looking for.

How do I become eligible?

Once students have earned a 2.40 GPA and 12 college/university credit hours (EM/Transfer credits from high school do not apply) they are eligible to receive a membership invitation from any of our University-recognized fraternities and sororities. For both men and women you must register online to be eligible to receive an invitation to join an organization.

*If you are a transfer student you must submit a transcript (or a transfer credit report) before any chapter can offer you an invitation to join. All transcripts should be turned directly into Helen Rotnem, Coordinator of Greek Life, at the Ohio Union (at Ohio Stadium).

A quick way to run a transfer credit report is to click on the Run a Transfer Credit Report link on this website: http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/ourweb/Transfer_Credit/index_transCred.html.

Questions to Ask?

Joining a fraternity or sorority requires making an educated decision about the organization of which you will be a life-long member. Please utilize both local and chapter websites, as well as asking the following questions of organizational leaders and individual members:

  • How will membership in this organization benefit me? Academically? Personally?
  • What is the organization looking for in an ideal member?
  • What leadership opportunities are available for me in this organization?
  • Does this organization perform community service regularly? Will I be asked to perform individual community service hours each quarter?
  • Will I be required to live in the chapter's facility (if applicable) as a member?
  • How long is the organization's new member/pre-initiation period (if applicable)? What will be expected of me during this time?
  • What were the organization's greatest accomplishments of the past quarter/year?
  • What are the financial obligations of membership?
  • What is the time requirement for recruitment/intake?
